Men in Suit

We live in an era of self-proclaimed gurus, experts and innovators. We are constantly looking for the next Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. We religiously read books on how we can become rich and successful. We obsessively share articles on how successful people think, spend their weekends, summer holidays and invest their money. We naively believe that we can become billionaires overnight. I seriously think we got it all wrong!

Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself – and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That’s what real love amounts to – letting a person be what he really is.

Innocence and Childhood

The notion of innocence refers to children’s simplicity, their lack of knowledge, and their purity not yet spoiled by mundane affairs. Such innocence is taken as the promise of a renewal of the world by the children. Innocence has been attributed to children and childhood by adults at all times, but content and social function of such glorifying assessments show considerable variation over time and context, and the valuation is never unanimous among contemporaries. Innocence used to be a religious notion in earlier times.

Innocence is then emphasized to defend the assumption of an absence of sexuality in children and the demand for such absence. Innocence is not a scientific term; therefore, the numerous studies concerning processes, seminal ideas, and functions of the value assessment of children and childhood do not constitute a unified research area. Researchers deal with questions of children’s innocence often rather implicitly.

Behind Blue Eyes

Variation in the colour of the eyes from brown to green can all be explained by the amount of melanin in the iris, but blue-eyed individuals only have a small degree of variation in the amount of melanin in their eyes. “From this we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor,” says Professor Eiberg. “They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA.” Brown-eyed individuals, by contrast, have considerable individual variation in the area of their DNA that controls melanin production.

Professor Eiberg and his team examined mitochondrial DNA and compared the eye colour of blue-eyed individuals in countries as diverse as Jordan, Denmark and Turkey. His findings are the latest in a decade of genetic research, which began in 1996, when Professor Eiberg first implicated the OCA2 gene as being responsible for eye colour.

London Fashion

Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower. Freedom stands for something greater than just the right to act however I choose—it also stands for securing to everyone an equal opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Just living is not enough.

Securing freedom from fear and freedom from want is very likely to entail some collective, organized action. That kind of activity is often carried out most effectively and efficiently (although, admittedly, not perfectly) by the government. If we want to live in a society where freedoms are protected and where the opportunity to exercise freedom is assured, we have to rely on some form of governance. So far, liberal representative democracy seems to do the best job of it.

Being Trendy

This insight came to me when I was struggling with the death of a loved one and the end of a romantic relationship. At the time, I had been working with a mediation practice I like to call the ‘reset meditation’. Have you ever wished that life was like a video game in which you could hit a reset button and re-start from a new and fresh perspective? I think this mediation comes pretty close to achieving that feeling. It works by training your brain to shift its focus from the details of the current story (or problem) to the vastness of pure potential; to the possibilities of something new and inspired.
